Home internet in Thailand began with research and academic efforts between 1987 and 1992, then moved into commercial service and grew rapidly into today's fiber optic era.
1. Experiments and Beginnings (1987–1992)
- 1987 — Thailand's internet began as data-connection experiments among academics, driven by the National Electronics and Computer Technology Center (NECTEC), using UUCP to exchange email and data internationally over telecom lines.
- 1992 — Thailand connected to the international internet for the first time at 9.6 kbps, through a network supported by NECTEC and Prince of Songkla University, mainly for research.
2. Commercial Internet Arrives (1995)
- Home internet went commercial when INET and KSC Internet became Thailand's first ISPs.
- Connections used dial-up modems over telephone lines, starting at 28.8 kbps and rising to 56 kbps.
- Users paid additional phone charges based on time online.
3. The High-Speed Era (2000–2010)
- 2000 — ADSL technology raised speeds to 128 kbps–8 Mbps, with major providers such as TOT, TRUE, and CAT Telecom expanding networks to homes and offices.
- 2010 — Fiber optic technology made high-speed internet mainstream, with Fiber to the Home (FTTH) offered by TRUE Online, 3BB, and AIS Fibre.
4. Government Support
- Thailand ICT Master Plan — developing national digital infrastructure.
- The USO (Universal Service Obligation) program — bringing internet to rural and remote areas.
5. The Growth of Home Internet
Competition between ISPs cut prices and raised speeds, making access easy for everyone. Today, Thai home internet reaches 1–2 Gbps and covers more than 90% of the country.
